Whats up medium, my name’s Nick Hughes and something you may not know about me is that this is my first medium post. However that’s not all there is to me, I am a big fan of comedy and started by taking improv classes when I was 12, I started to do stand up right before the pandemic hit. On top of this I love sports more specifically, basketball, in fact I am often thought of by myself, as the best basketball player to ever retire in middle school. The most interesting thing about me though is that I am the only person in my entire family heritage to be born in America. Both of my younger sisters had a chance but were born in Montreal during the 8 years we lived there. My entire extended family still resides in Canada and with the pandemic going on, this was the first year my family and I were unable to take a trip up north.

Here is a pciture of my family and I in PEI Canada. This is were we go every summer and the providence where my mom was born and raised.

As for what I am doing at Montclair, I am a communication and media arts major. I would be lying If I said I knew exactly what a career in this field looks like but so far I am a fan of the major. Based on the classes I took I am hoping that I would have the ability to enter a field where public speaking required due it being something I am passionate and skilled at. On top of this I would really like for my career to be based around my interpersonal skills, I don’t think I would have the ability to work a desk job and be working alone all day. The classes I found the most success as well as the most joy in were fundamentals of speech and college writing one. The public speaking class allowed me to scratch that itch I had been missing from stand up since the epidemic started. I loved the process of this class, not just the actual speech giving, I liked putting the speech together and then watching it all pan out in class. It was like skydiving without the health risks, I would love to do this in life, write a speech and then try to compel dozens of people to actively listen. I have never have been a big fan of writing but in college the prompts and creative freedom that was allowed really got me to look at writing very differently. While my first semester is over there is still so much I have to learn and even though I dont have my future settled on yet I definitely have a better idea after this semester of what I want to do.
